"I am ra representative of my government."

"In that case we'd like to ask you some questions about violating our air space, piloting a spaceship without a license, failure to respond to airtraffic control, employing people without a permit, negligent manslaughter of a good dozen of your people, and operating a unlicensed nuclear reactor within our territory. Will you be presenting your certificate of ambassador plennipotential status now or later?"

"Um... It's not actually nuclear?"

"I'm sure our lawyers can demonstrate otherwise."

Oh c'mon, think BIG! The entire Alliance is dodging proper procedure!

(Reminds me of when aliens were called "FROGS" ... )

The Major knows what's up here.

Gharr might be a great xenobiologist, but he clearly has no training in diplomacy. 😆

Pronin spotted Gharrs lack of that in a fraction of a second, crafty as he is.

He already is wearing his "I have this fine reliable , hardly used Moskvitch for sale" face...

Avatar

I am now wondering whether he might try and not tell Gharr that there is an Alliance delegation just next door (as Gharr has involuntarily told him that he's not aware of that, apparently still not having turned his implant back on) ...

Gharr knows the ship has landed with the rescue team. Maybe he wants to know how much the Major (and all the rest of them) will tell him?

Avatar

The implant is not visible....Last seen on page 229...

Most handily, all frames here with Gharr covers that particulate area..

Truly the work of a "master of suspense" here!

I would not be surprised if Gharr forgot it back at Dan´s on the mantelpiece....Oops.

Also, I am confused about something : Are they all at the same place ? I think Nea , Zane and the A-team is at crashsite....And I think Gharr and B-team is at the base....Or what ?

Avatar

The base has been erected at the crash site (see page 88).

OK, thanks . I thought there was a base where the Missile-launchers was..thats 120km from the crashsite..but going back in the comic, thats just a small airdefence station, not a larger compound...

So : We can presume all actors are at the same place. The stage is set. Light is on...and.....ACTION !

> Gharr knows the ship has landed with the rescue team.

Nnnnnot exactly. His latest information (that we're privy of) is that one ship is approaching Earth, and his reaction to Dan offering that intel is a wary "if my people are coming here like you said ...".

That panel 5 reminds me of young Gharr back on page 168 panel 4 . Hard to break a habit. Lets hope it ends better !

Why has Gharr not yet turned on his USBrain Dongle ? He would know that Zane and the A-team is there...maybe right next door.

Nea has not told much so only Dan, Mark & Val actually knows that they are dealing with 15 alien species in an Alliance. It will be a bombshell !

I have to agree, the resemblance between the two panels is so funny!

"I am the representative of my civilization on this planet. I demand their immediate release."

"... if you say so, your majesty. Shall I inform the emperor that his presence is no longer needed?"

"... the who now?"

"We welcomed him and his entourage this morning, if I remember the transmission announcing his arrival correctly, his name is Zane Htrua Sha."

"... eep."

(On a more serious note, Gharr should have immediately protested against the term "abduction".)

Avatar

(1) "I want to speak with Zane immediately!"

(2) "What do you mean- ABDUCTION?"

yes he should have stated right there that the 3 stooges are his friends to "curb" interrogative adventurism. Flatly stating that thanks to them he has a positive perception of the natives.

Pronin ,as a systemsman after-all has his own perception of things and civilians butting in from the side is not something he can handle wisely, look at his dealings with Agent Iskra as a non-military person.

And the first failure decision-making of the series', combined to a charisma roll fail.

Meh, it's been a long time since any political aspect of this first contact was beyond Gharr's competence, so it's not surprising that the painful cinderblock of the reality crashed down on him at his first attempt to try it. Let's be honest 5min, Gharr would have been a poor ambasador of the Alliance, he don't belong here, he's just a scientist. The worst thing that can happen to Gharr is that the Major decide to have a little fun with him, knowing that Zane and the real-politik is 10 meter aside.

We finally have a name for the Major! (Time to update the Cast page?)

Panel 3 shows me that the interrogation won't go well.

Major Pronin: "Have you interrogated them yet?!"

Soldier: "They keep bikkering! we haven't been able to get a word in..."

Avatar

As best I can tell, Nea hasn't told the Major Gharr's name. But she may have since done so off panel. On the other hand. They've probably been recording conversations and such, so if the Major has kept up with some key words that have been picked up on, like Gharr's name, its possible he would recognise it.

Gharr is likely also unaware that someone else survived the crash and simply being a Raharr is not impressing the Major who's been talking regularly with one.

Avatar

Gharr could start by simply explaining what happened, and how he was saved and protected (and taught to communicate effectively!)

Panel 3 , "blame game"

Panel 10 , plotting & scheming "Toothpaste Smile" if I have ever seen one.

Pronin must feel certain smiling at Raharr is "friendly". Is it friendly ?

Besides that, lets hope the questioning stays benign. If someone else, like Bahin

or the people higher up behind feels his their entire worldview or power-pyramid is threatened, things can still go sideways.

Avatar

A quick flick through the archives and every single instance of a Raharr smiling is without showing teeth. The only exception is when they're talking and possibly pannel 4 of this flashback from Gharr's youth, but even that has a speech bubble.

All the other expressions I see with teeth suggest disdain, disgruntlement or some other negative emotion.

Well, TBH, the plot didn't exactly had a lot of room for happy grinning raharrs... ^^"
